So Very True

There is a webcomic I read every day called User Friendly. Its fairly geeky (alright, more than fairly, it is flat out totally geeky). Today though the author posted an interesting book review / commentary on society. It is about something we all recognize in society today, but can’t seem to properly handle.

The Climate of Fear. In our present modern era, we are the safest as a society that we have ever been. Crime has significantly trended downwards over the last 30 years, murder rates are at low, kidnappings at a low, industrial accidents at a low. But when you pickup the paper, or turn on the tv, you are bombarded with images and sound bites that have the essential message, walk out your door, and you will be murdered and raped, and your kids will be assualted, and we will then all die in a terrorist attack. The messages are everywhere.

I look at my nephews, and I am left to wonder. Will they be allowed to go out and play for hours at a time out in the neighborhood without a parent to supervise? I remember being out in the woods behind my house for literally 8 hours in a day, with little or no fuss. Can kids today do that? Do they do that? Will my kids be able to?

Check out the review, it is very interesting. And I think I might track down this book. I have been on something of a non-fiction kick recently, and this will just fit the bill.

Peter the reason your parents let you play in the woods for 8 hours a day was in hopes you would not come back. HAHA. I couldn’t help myself.

Yeah, I grew up in Maine and my parents would let us do anything we wanted. I miss the days of make shift survival shelters, cutting down trees, apple wars, and playing guns.

The freeks were around in the 70s and 80s too. We had a guy in our neighborhood one day who was driving around on a bike with his dick sticking out of his pants. A bunch of us kids told our parents. I remember the parents grabbing the guns and then calling the police. The guy was never caught but I think back then the police never followed up on things like that.

Our problem with our society is we try to reabilitate these guys and release them to society. I personally think we should do what George Carlin said. Put them in one of the square states and fence them in. But of course, I would put them on a island. It would be cheaper to give them a club med experience than giving them therapy, work release, court feeds and who knows what else. If they escape and get caught we can just shoot them in the head. To keep them in, I’m ok with putting a few sharks and other man eating sea creatures around the island too. Of course, taking a page out of George Carlins book, we could release a couple of grizzly bears once a year. I would set it up as a gift for the prisoners. Every month we could drop off supplies in a storage container but randomly we would put a few hungry and pissed off bears in the container. In addition, we can make a deodorant that the prisoners would use that has a few femal bear hormons and a hint of pacific salmon in it.(unable to be sensed by prisioners)
Imagine the container being opened up? Wait, you wouldn’t have to because you could watch this on pay per view for $19.99. Of course, the money raised could pay for the club med experience. We could even be more creative once and awhile buy putting in a bunch of pissed off honey bees in the container with the beers. The month before we could put queen bee pheromones and the hint of honey in the deodorant. Yes, and i know there would be a few inncocent guys who would be in their because they were 19 years old and the girlfriend was 17 and they were accused of statutory rape. But then again, whats a few innocent people going to matter. It beats the alternative fof being innocent in lock down in having to be the girlfriend of T-BAG.

Peter, I would be worried about my nephews too. Espcially be so close to VT where the love sickos!

NOT YA BIOTCH

The freaks have always been there. The difference between 1988 and 2008 is…. in 1988 the local TV news would tell you about local freaks, news and events. 2008, the local news consists of local freaks, national freaks and some dude in Nebraska that crashed his ultra-light. Fear and despair drive ratings.
