In the novel Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, the threat of a cable cutting war by a group of world governments breaks out to stop the spread of a new digital currency that could threaten the incomes of major world governments.
I am reminded of this kind of stuff when I read about yet another undersea communications cable being cut in the Middle East. Now these are not getting a lot of attention in the press, and for the life of me I can’t understand why. Yes I know cables break out there, that is why there are ships to fix them. But to have so many important cables cut in so short of a time (now 5 in a 1.5 weeks) is just plain suspicious. I mean, internet access across the continent is being cutoff by this stuff.
I am left to wonder why we are not hearing much about this in the news. I am also wondering why statements from National Telecomms in the Middle East aren’t more forth coming. If you wanted to prevent rumors from spreading, you would be putting information out there to let people know what is going on. Of course, if you don’t know anything, and it seems suspicious to you, then you wouldn’t say much. And that’s what is happening right now, and that’s why I say something fishy is going on.
Oh, on a side note, it must suck to be an American company that offshored support and IT services to India to save money. I bet that little plan is biting you in the ass right now.
