Health Insurance… what’s the fucking point?

Could someone tell me please, what is the point of having health insurance that doesn’t actually cover the cost of your medical needs? I mean, seriously, why?

Many of you know that for the last year or so, I have suffered from “chest discomfort”. This unknown, and apparently undiagnosable ailment has caused me nothing but pain and discomfort for a long time. My previous doctor, a nice enough guy, never seemed able to get past his obvious palsy and come around to some sort of diagnosis. I have been hospitalized, poked and prodded, and nothing.

Now I have this new insurance provider, and a new doctor with all sorts of ideas and at least something approaching a diagnositc process that might lead to an understanding of what is causing this issue. He orders tests. I go and get tests done. He gets results. Results are normal. He orders different tests. Repeat as needed.

Now, this doctor, and the group of doctors he belongs to at Beth Israel have this cool website which allows for me to have secure access to my medical information. The information is quite broad, and it contains neat and interesting tidbits like blood work, x-ray analysis, test results, and BILLING!

Ah, billing…. here comes the best part. These tests turn out to be, haha, not cheap. It does, however, turn out that my insurance company is cheap. They aren’t covering a significant portion of these tests. The bills are, how do you say, LARGE? I mean seriously, we are talking about buying a couple of computers at the moment, and it is only getting worse.

I am a believer in markets and capitalism and stuff. But sometimes, I look at this shit, and I think, maybe there is something to this whole Socialism thing like my friend Baelz says.

Look for a stream of checks to start showing up in your mailbox from PayTrust. They should help begin to repay what Sean and I owe you for utilities, and you can cash Sean’s check on the 15th. It’s not “a few computers’ worth” of cash, but hopefully it’ll help defray some costs.

And yes, I do believe in socialism quite strongly because of situations just like this. I feel America has gone too far in favoring corporate profitability over the well-being of its citizens. When I watched Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room, that strong belief in socialism got even stronger. The scale of the corruption and corporate collusion that was necessary to make that debacle possible is staggering. If you ever want to HEAR me grind my teeth, mention Enron.

I hope your doctors can come up with something to help you after all this expense. If not, I’ll hold them down while you harvest their organs a la Turistas Go Home. There’s gold in them thar thoracic cavities!
